Mysterious Mansion

Usually the only time you can locate a serious haunted house is during the month of October.  And even then, it's often subpar and put on by a church or community theater with a scare factor of perhaps a five on a scale of one to ten.  Unless you happen to be in Gatlinburg, that is.

The Mysterious Mansion is open all year-round and will have you wetting your pans in fright.  From the very beginning when you're made to find your own secret passageway into the haunted house, you're on your own to work your way through the house of terror, complete with dark, dank dungeons and winding staircases.  While there seems to be only one man, a professional actor/menace, roaming the corridors waiting to jump out and seize hold of your terror, many of the rooms give you the spine-tingling impression that there is no way out, only further enhancing the sensation; the fear factor in the Mysterious Mansion is more psychological than anything else.  Plus, there's one freaky clown, and anyone who saw Stephen King's It knows that's enough to scare a person senseless.

Those with pacemakers or weak hearts should probably sit this one out.  One thing to note: The outside looks deceivingly large, but it will only take you twenty minutes, thirty tops, to scream your way through the house.

The Mysterious Mansion is located at 424 River Rd. in downtown Gatlinburg just off the main strip.

Guided Horseback Riding Tours!

Do you love horseback riding (or want to give it a try)?  Well, it doesn't get much better than riding through this beautiful part of the country!

The view of this area from horseback will not only let you see it like you never have before, but will give you the chance to step back in time.

Rides can be as slow and easy or as challenging as you'd like.

Let us know if you you would like to book a day on the trails. There are a few companies it the area, we like to use a smaller outfit that isn't as "structured" and more easy going and is often an individual/private ride. Spend a couple of hours, or spend the day with the likes of this cutie!

Prices depend on the length of the ride.  If you have questions, please let us know!

Restaurant Recommendation - The Bean Trees

Fresh food for carnivores and vegetarians alike riverside dining.  Organic coffee, casual, locally owned and operated.  Downtown Hartford

The Bean Trees Cafe was born to four Hartford women who saw the need for a place where friends, old and new, could gather for a bite to eat, a cold beer, or a hot cup of Joe.  The original intention was to make a small coffee shop.  However, between our love of cooking and the realization that this no-horse town was in need of something more, we decided to go big or go home.  This lead us to what you are will experience: a highly disorganized and chaotic mess that is an ongoing project!

You will most likely see the owner, Michelle running around here somewhere.  She knocks herself out improving the restaurant and always attempting to make everyone's visit as best as possible.  Luckily she has her friends and family to assist her in the never-ending quest for perfection.

P.S. We appreciate your patience.  We are not a fast food restaurant.  We want your food to taste the best it can so we cook all food fresh to order. They have local bands play on Thursdays in the summer.

After Memorial Day Weekend we will be open:
 8am - 9pm Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sat.
Friday 10 - 5
Sunday 10 - 4
Monday - Closed

Ober Gatlinburg

Things are heating up in the Mountains of East Tennessee!  If you're looking to beat the heat, head up to Ober Gatlinburg!

Ober is an amusement park and ski area, located in the mountains overlooking Gatlinburg.  Established in 1962, the area contains a large mall with indoor amusements, a skating rink, snack bars, a full-service lounge, restaurant, and gift and clothing stores.

Outside there is an alpine slide, the ski mountain coaster, a chair swing, a maze, mini gold and scenic chairlift to the top of Mount Harrison, and kiddie rides.

What was formerly know as the Black Bear Habitat where visitors could see bears close-up recently expanded to become the Wildlife Encounter, here in addition to the bears there are animals native to the Great Smoky Mountains such as bobcats, river otters, opossums, raccoons, turtles, snakes, and flying squirrels.  An aerial tram connects Ober Gatlinburg to downtown Gatlinburg, about 3 miles to the east.

Recommendation: Foothills Parkway with Lunch

If you are looking for something to do but want to sleep in, are short on time, or you don't want to deal with the heat, check this out...

The entrance to the Foothills Parkway (see the post on the Foothills Parkway under "Drives") is only about 6 miles from the Garage Mahal, the whole loop is about 20 miles.  The views from the Parkway are amazing with lots of turn offs for photo ops.

At the end of the Parkway take the I-40 ramp towards Asheville, and get off at the next exit which is Hartford.  Not a lot to the cute little town, mostly rafting companies, but there is the Goodwater Winery Tasting Room and The Bean Trees Cafe.  I recommend having lunch at the Cafe, sit outside, have a drink in the shade next to the Pigeon River and relax...

Gatlinburg Space Needle

No trip to Gatlinburg is complete without some time up at the Gatlinburg Space needle.

Gatlinburg's Space Needle is a steel tower 400 feet off the ground, with an observation deck equipped with view finders providing a 360-degree view of Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains.  The view take on a different appearance at light, when Gatlinburg's main Parkway is lit up.

When you've had enough of the view, get on one of the glass elevators and head for Arcadia, a two-level, 25,000 square-foot recreation center home to various attractions such as Extreme Lazer Tag, Hurricane Simulator, and a mega-sized ticket-redemption arcade.

Recommended Day Hike

If you are looking for a good day of hiking with beautiful views, check this out!

One of our favorite day hikes is Charlie's Bunion followed by a short "hike" up to Clingman's Dome to watch the sunset.
(see the Charlie's Bunion and Clingman's Dome posts under "hiking")

Charlie's Bunion is about 8 miles round trip, so you can plan on around 4-5 hours, give or take...

So, sleep in and relax! And, with an elevation of 5,564, it's going to be much cooler up there!!!

Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Adventures Dinner Show

Dolly Parton has opened a brand new Pigeon Forge dinner show in 2017 called "Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Adventures Dinner Show"! This new show replaced the Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show and is located in the same venue in front of The Island in Pigeon Forge.  After the incredible success of Dolly Parton's two NBC movie specials about her childhood, her and her team have worked to create an original show based on the life of her family before she was born.  According to their executive team, this new show is based on what customers have consistently been requesting through the past year.

Here is what Dolly Parton had to say about this brand new dinner show in Pigeon Forge:

"This new story is very special to me.  That is why during my first visit to the Great Smoky Mountains this year I will open a new show that celebrates my family before I was born.  With the success of my family stories Coat of Many Colors and Christmas of Many Colors - Circle of Love over the last two years, I know this was a story I wanted to tell and the theater in Pigeon Forge near The Island is the perfect venue."

The show is set in the "backdrop of Dolly Parton's music and tapestry of characters", so this new show has much more of a "Dolly" feel than Lumberjack Feud had.

Below, we have more details including the opening date, how to purchase tickets, the food menu, and more!

Opening Date for Smoky Mountain Adventures Dinner Show

The Dinner Show opened on April 21, 2017!  Tickets are now available and can be purchased by calling their box officer directly at 844-322-4400.  Adult tickets range from $45-$50 depending on seating.

The Old Mill Restaurant

The history behind The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge dates back 200 years.  The popular tourist attraction is know as the "most photographed mill in the country".  It began with the Iron Forge.  The Iron Forge was established by a man named Isaac Love.  Love inherited the space from his Father-in-Law, who owned 151 acres of land in the area--what we now know as Pigeon Forge.

During that time, the iron was smelted, hammered and cast into farming utensils, building equipment and more.  "The remains of the Iron Forge, as far as we know, were dismantled as sold off for parts around the 1880s" Said Jimmy Proffitt, Old Mill Historian.

Isaac Love and his son, William, built the Old Mill in 1830.  Since then, it has been a post office, hospital, electric company and more.  "What you see here today, is pretty similar to what you would have seen in 1830 when the mill itself was built," added Proffitt.

The current owners are the seventh to own the Old Mill.  Today it is a working museum and restaurant but keeping true to the heritage.  They grind more than 600,000 pounds of grain a year.  Each is hand-bagged, weighed and hand-tied. The stones are still water-powered.  "It really is exciting to be able to preserve this and still operate it as such," said Proffitt. "We're not just a museum--we're still operating every single day."

The district has grown up around it as well, selling pottery, ice cream, candy, jams and jellies and now distilled spirits.

Pigeon Forge honors the old Mill District each year with the Heritage Day Festival. This year they'll celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Iron Forge.  That event will be on September 23rd, and admission is free.

Get a taste of true Southern Hospitality at The Old Mill Restaurant.  We're known for our old-fashioned, classic Southern food; and we've gained a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the Smokies.  We're a favorite local spot and attraction for a day trip to Pigeon Forge.

Dine in our double-tiered, wood paneled dining room that overlooks the Pigeon River. Located adjacent to the Old Mill, it offers views of the great water wheel that powers the mill; as the massive stones grind grains in the mill you can watch the wheel turn just below the dam.  And you'll enjoy some of the stone-ground grits, breads, biscuits, pancakes, and muffins that are made from ingredients ground right next door.

Start your day with a hearty Southern breakfast; fluffy warm biscuits and muffins, cooked-to-order eggs, pancakes, grits and pepper gravy, sausage, bacon and more.  For lunch or dinner, you'll never forget our country-fried steak, sugar-cured ham, pot roast and gravy, chicken and dumplings, chicken potpie, and much more.  All entrees come with Signature Corn Chowder, fresh salad, fresh vegetables and sides served family-style, and homemade desserts. Some of our "secret" recipes can be duplicated at home; stop by the General Store or the Farmhouse Kitchen to find mixes for our gravy, pancakes, muffins, biscuits, chowder and much more! Our famous pecan pies are baked from scratch daily at The Old Mill Restaurant, and they are available year round to take home.
